In 2008, police officers of the Granite City Police Department formed a youth fishing program known as “Shielded Waters.” This community based program targets area youth by promoting the art of fishing for all youths of all ages in order for them to develop and become successful. Youths are provided a means and an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, meet new friends, and experience the excitement of catching fish. It is our mission to endorse sportsmanship, self confidence, and most importantly, self respect. Shielded Waters has an annual kickoff in March to officially start the season followed by approximately eight fishing derby’s throughout the fishing season from April to October. All fishing events are scheduled to be held mostly within Granite City, Illinois. Messages pertaining to substance abuse and good decision making are coupled with techniques on knot tying, patience, and having fun! Shielded Waters is endorsed and supported by the Granite City Police Union PBPA Unit 15 which is a non-profit organization with an official 501c3. Shielded Waters is also endorsed and sponsored by the Steel City Bassmaster’s Organization which provides support and participation. It is our hopes to continue to promote the art of fishing amongst our youths by utilizing our ideas, opportunities, and resources in every way possible. Again, thank you for your interest with the program! Lt. Craig Knight; Detective Brian Cave; Ofc. Jeremy Hunter; Detective Ron Fisher; Retired Police Chief Don Knight, and JC Markell Please contact: 618-876-9027 Ext 172 for more information. |
